Geek Chic Pixelpaper

Spoonflower, in partnership with Robert Kaufman Fabrics, is holding its 2013 Fabric8 Contest this month on the theme of “Geek Chic.”

I’m pretty excited. I’ve been working on a collection of patterns called Pixelpaper for a while now – I’m pretty obsessed with pixelation and all the things that go along with it; computer icons, space invaders, 8bit simplification, digital glitches and the cliff effect…

It’s a little like an I Spy

I spy a keyboard, a hashtag, and pi, an invincible star, a frog, and a tie,
A really hard cube, a building block, two cameras, their chip, and one tiny lock.

One of these days I’ll post a tutorial on how to make repeating patterns like this. It’s super easy! Deadline for contest is April 23rd. Check it out!

Instagram Hacks: #FourQuestions_freeforall

@FourQuestions started a freeforall contest on Instagram with actual prizes and everything! Today is the last day, but check out the photos and the rules on their website. I’m totally obsessed with instagram hacks right now, so I’ve entered the following six edits based on others’ photos:

Collabs are with @tylerforesthauser @stevenromo @stacyreneee @krischanstclair

As an aside, I’m thinking of taking the concepts I’ve been working on here to make postcards to sell, so let me know what you think is working, and which ideas I should ditch. Thanks!

Instagram Hacks: #TylerForestHauser_freeforall

Instagram has spawned a super fun project medium called the #freeforall.

Instagrammers post a handful of their unused photos on the internets for downloading and you edit them and post them to IG with the appropriate hashtag. @tylerforesthauser started one of these a little while ago and his gorgeous photos make it way too easy to make pretty things. Here’s his website with downloads and instructions.

And here are my edits. (waaaaay too much fun…)

Designing Business Cards

People always ask me about my business cards – the front is minimal and informative, the back is abstract decorative. The bold graphic on the back is the initial attention-grabber, and then with the pretty part out of the way, the front can remain clean and simple with easy to find contact info.

Yet the two sides seem to fit together a little too well. And here’s where my training in process art comes in handy… I love telling people about these little secrets that I embed in my designs. Their eyes light up when they discover another layer to the object which isn’t at first obvious.

So, here’s the photo on the front of the card:

… now let’s zoom in…

Do you see it? It’s so simple, it borders on downright laziness.

Also, the three colors on the ‘ggg’ of Ringgg are just color picked from this same photo. Yay!

More Instagram Hacks

Love the juxtaposition of the oldish looking filtered photos with the crispness of vector drawings. These are definitely becoming an obsession :)

I’m thinking about printing out some travel landscapes and altering them similar to this, but with patterned washi tape. What do you think? Stay tuned…
